He was tricolor in color, with long hair, a merry temperament and attracted attention.
Trefoil can be traced back in the lines of many purebred collies today. He is most well known for siring Ch. Charlemagne who first appeared in the show ring in 1877 and went on to become a champion and make a large impact on the modern day Collie.
Collie expert of the time, Hugt Dalziel, described him: "the champion of his age, having authentic qualities of the collies".
Trefoil is said to be the first Collie with a recognizable pedigree.
