The first record of a White Collie is that of a female called
THE LILY born in 1881.
She had an all white body with sable head markings. Although we have
a three generation pedigree of THE LILY and all the ancestors were colored
Collies, we will just have to conclude that THE LILY's color was a sport or
throwback to some distant ancestor.
The Lily was a great-grandmother of Champion Metchley Wonder,
a dog that I will wager every Collie in America can tract back to her, so
consequently, we have her color continually cropping out in dogs apparently
straight colored in breeding. Hence, the start of the present day White Collie.
Up until about thirty-five years ago, however, these sport white puppies
were considered undesirable and most of them were destroyed at an early day,
which is the reason there were not many whites before 1910.
Unfortunately, and ambitious man about this time wanted to produce an all
white quickly, so it is thought that he introduced Samoyed or Spitz blood to get
the all white color. Up until this time there had been no White Collies born from
purebred parents that were all white.
Mr. Avery of Ohio and Mrs. Seaman of California, however, were the original
White Collie breeders from purebred Collies and their dogs all had colored head
marking and a small amount of body marks were quite prevalent. This is as it is
today in all the leading white kennels. We are striving for a White that equals the
winning colored Collies in head properties and coat. We want the head colored
identically as in the colors, so as to give true Collie expression. The only difference
we desire is a white body with a few spots on the body.
Astolat White Prince was my first good White, born in 1933.
He was by Lochland Lookout, (a White by a White ex White-bred Sable).
His dam was Kollrca Emmaline by a sable, CH Bergamot Bandolier ex a white bitch
by Astolat White Lustrita by Kollrca White Mugwump. Royalty was never beaten by
another White (Collie). He was by Astolat White Prince, three times "Best White" of
Madison Square Garden. Three times "First White" at Morris and Essex. Twice
"Reserve Winner". The last "Reserve" at Springfield, Mass. It was a four point show.
I was also the breeder of INT/CH Astolat Peerless.
Peerless won more Best of Breeds than any Collie in history and his mother
was White - Astolat White Clover. His sire was CH Honeybrook Big Parade. I also sold
Peerless' litter brother - Astolat King Parade and a white bred sable daughter of
Landmark to a man in California. The two were bred together and produced Ch
California King Parade.
